London is home to some of the UK’s finest hair transplant surgeons — and some of its most aggressively marketed, volume-driven clinics. Knowing what to look for helps you find the former and avoid the latter.
CQC Registration
Any clinic in England performing hair transplant surgery must be registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC). You can verify registration on the CQC website. Unregistered clinics are operating outside the law — walk away.
Surgeon Credentials
Check that the surgeon performing your procedure is registered with the General Medical Council (GMC). Ask specifically about their training in hair restoration surgery. Membership of professional bodies such as the British Association of Hair Restoration Surgeons (BAHRS) or the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) is a positive indicator.
Genuine Before-and-After Evidence
Every London clinic will show you before-and-after photos. Ask specifically for: patients with similar hair loss to yours, results at 12 months (not 6), and a range of cases — not just their best. If a clinic cannot or will not show diverse, genuine results, treat this as a red flag.
Harley Street Standards
Harley Street is synonymous with UK private medicine, and clinics operating here are expected to maintain corresponding standards. This includes full surgeon involvement in procedures, appropriate medical facilities, and comprehensive aftercare. These standards are not uniform, however — the address alone is not a guarantee of quality.
What You Should Expect at Your Consultation
A thorough consultation in London should include: a medical history review, trichoscopy or magnification assessment of donor and recipient zones, a detailed explanation of the proposed plan with honest expectations, and discussion of medical management options. If your consultation feels rushed or primarily commercial, seek an alternative opinion.
