Exercise After Hair Transplant: When Can You Go Back to the Gym?

✎ anzal • 📅 26 February 2026 • ⏱ 1 min read

For gym-goers and active patients, the question of when exercise is safe after a hair transplant is an important one. The concern is not just about grafts being disturbed — elevated blood pressure, sweating, and physical contact all pose specific risks depending on the phase of recovery.

Why Exercise Needs to Be Restricted

In the first 7–14 days, elevated blood pressure from exercise increases blood flow to the scalp, which can cause bleeding at graft sites, increase swelling, and in severe cases displace grafts. Sweating creates a moist environment that increases infection risk and can soften crusts prematurely, making grafts vulnerable.

The Recovery Timeline for Exercise

Days 1–7: Rest Only

No exercise beyond gentle walking at a slow pace. No activity that elevates your heart rate significantly. This is non-negotiable in the first week.

Days 7–14: Light Activity

Gentle walking is fine. Light stretching at home is acceptable. Still avoid the gym, running, cycling, or anything that causes sweating.

Week 2–4: Light Cardio Returns

From around day 14, light cardiovascular activity — easy cycling, slow jogging — can resume. Avoid anything with impact to the head or the risk of collision. Wash hair promptly after any activity that causes sweating.

Week 4–6: Most Gym Activity Returns

Most weight training, running, and non-contact gym work can resume from week 4. Avoid very heavy lifting that causes significant straining or Valsalva manoeuvre, which dramatically raises blood pressure.

Week 6+: Full Return

Contact sports, swimming in chlorinated pools, and full gym activity can resume from 6 weeks for most patients. Outdoor swimming in open water should wait until all scalp healing is complete.
