Diet After Hair Transplant: Foods That Support Growth

✎ anzal • 📅 19 March 2026 • ⏱ 2 min read

While no diet will compensate for poor surgical technique, optimising your nutrition after a hair transplant can genuinely support healing, graft survival, and the speed and quality of new hair growth. Here are the nutrients and foods that matter most.

Protein: The Building Block of Hair

Hair is made almost entirely of keratin — a protein. Adequate protein intake is essential for hair growth. Aim for at least 1.2–1.5g of protein per kg of body weight daily in the weeks after your procedure. Sources: chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, Greek yoghurt, lentils, beans.

Iron: Critical for Oxygen Delivery

Iron carries oxygen in the blood to the scalp and healing follicles. Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional causes of hair loss. Red meat, dark leafy greens, lentils, and fortified cereals are good sources. Pair with vitamin C to improve absorption.

Zinc: Tissue Repair and Follicle Health

Zinc plays a role in protein synthesis and DNA repair — both essential for tissue healing and hair follicle function. Oysters, pumpkin seeds, beef, and chickpeas are good dietary sources. Be cautious with supplementation — excessive zinc can actually inhibit hair growth.

Vitamin D: Follicle Activation

Vitamin D receptors are found in hair follicles, and deficiency is associated with hair loss. In the UK, where sun exposure is limited, supplementation of 1,000–2,000 IU daily is sensible for most people — particularly through winter months.

Biotin: Overrated but Not Irrelevant

Biotin supplementation is widely marketed for hair growth. The evidence is solid only in those with a genuine biotin deficiency (relatively uncommon). It does no harm and may support keratin production.

What to Avoid in the First Weeks

  • High-sodium foods — worsen swelling
  • Alcohol — impairs healing and is a blood thinner
  • Excessive sugar — promotes inflammation
  • Crash diets — nutritional restriction impairs healing and hair growth
