Redness After Hair Transplant: When Does It Fade?

✎ anzal • 📅 21 April 2026 • ⏱ 1 min read

Redness in the recipient area after a hair transplant is one of the most common concerns patients raise at their follow-up appointments. It is entirely normal — but the duration varies between individuals and some patients find it persists longer than expected.

Why the Scalp Stays Red

Redness after transplant is caused by increased blood flow to the area as part of the inflammatory healing response. Thousands of micro-incisions were made in the scalp; the body responds by sending increased circulation to heal these wounds. The overlying skin reflects this as pinkness or redness.

Normal Timeline for Redness

  • Days 1–14: Moderate redness in the recipient zone — expected
  • Weeks 2–6: Gradual fading; should be significantly reduced by week 4–6
  • Months 2–4: In most patients, redness has resolved or is very mild
  • Months 4–6: Complete resolution in the vast majority of patients

Why Some Patients Have Prolonged Redness

Fairer skin shows redness more prominently. Patients who have had higher-density implantation or larger procedures may have more prolonged redness. Rosacea or sensitive skin types are also associated with longer recovery periods.

How to Help Redness Resolve

  • Avoid sun exposure — UV delays resolution of redness significantly
  • Avoid alcohol and spicy food — both cause flushing and vasodilation
  • Keep the scalp moisturised with a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser from week 3 onwards
  • If redness is persistent and bothersome at 3+ months, discuss with your surgeon — low-level laser therapy (LLLT) can help in resistant cases
