Hair colouring after a hair transplant is something many patients are keen to do — whether to cover grey, restore a natural colour, or simply maintain their existing routine. The guidance is straightforward: wait, and when you do colour, use the gentlest product available.
Chemical dye should not be applied to the recipient or donor area for at least four weeks after surgery. The scalp is healing during this period, and the harsh chemicals in permanent hair dyes — particularly ammonia and peroxide — can irritate healing tissue, disrupt scab formation, and potentially damage grafts that are establishing.
At four weeks, most of the scabbing has resolved and the grafts are anchored, but the scalp surface is still in a phase of active healing. If you colour your hair at this stage, use a gentle semi-permanent product and avoid contact with the scalp. Apply from the mid-shaft and avoid massaging colour into the recipient area.
From eight weeks onwards, most patients can return to their normal colouring routine without significant restriction. The scalp is fully healed and the grafts are well-established. Use your regular colourist and inform them of your recent procedure — an experienced stylist will handle a recently transplanted scalp with appropriate care.
