Hair Loss After COVID-19

Reports of hair loss following COVID-19 infection became widespread during and after the pandemic, and the phenomenon is now well-recognised clinically. Understanding what causes it — and whether it is permanent — is important for those who experienced it.

The hair loss associated with COVID-19 is primarily telogen effluvium — the diffuse shedding that occurs two to four months after a significant physiological stressor. The SARS-CoV-2 infection itself, combined in some cases with the fever, nutritional stress, and extended illness that can accompany it, is sufficient to push a large proportion of scalp follicles into the telogen (resting) phase simultaneously.

The shedding typically occurs in the two to four months following the acute infection and can be alarming in its scale — patients describe dramatically increased hair loss when washing or brushing that looks very different from normal daily shedding. In most cases, the shedding represents a temporary disruption of the hair cycle rather than permanent follicle damage.

For the majority of people who experienced post-COVID hair loss, regrowth begins spontaneously within three to six months of the shedding phase, and full density is typically restored within twelve months. Nutritional support — particularly for iron, zinc, and vitamin D — may accelerate recovery.

For patients who had pre-existing androgenetic hair loss before COVID, the telogen effluvium may have unmasked or accelerated visible pattern loss that was already developing. These patients may benefit from medical assessment and potentially hair loss treatment beyond simply waiting for the telogen effluvium to resolve.
