Hair Transplant and Work: When Can I Go Back

✎ anzal • 📅 8 February 2026 • ⏱ 1 min read

Returning to work after a hair transplant is one of the most practically important recovery questions, and the answer varies significantly based on the nature of the work and the patient’s comfort with being visible during the early healing phase.

For office-based, desk jobs: most patients feel comfortable returning to work within three to five days. By this point, the donor area dressing is removed, the most significant swelling has resolved, and the recipient area can be partially covered with a loose hat. Remote working from day one is entirely possible — video calls with the camera off, or with a hat, are manageable immediately.

For patient-facing, public-facing, or client-facing roles: the decision depends on how comfortable the patient is with colleagues or clients seeing the early healing stage. By week two, the most obvious signs have resolved. Most patients in these roles plan two weeks off rather than one.

For physical jobs — construction, manual labour, outdoor work, retail requiring significant movement: ten to fourteen days is the recommended minimum. Physical exertion raises blood pressure and produces sweating, both of which are best avoided in the first week. Outdoor exposure to sun and dust also needs managing.

For healthcare workers or others in environments with specific infection control requirements: discuss with your surgeon. The healing scalp in the first ten days requires clean, low-contamination environments.

Planning leave around the procedure should account for the procedure day plus the recommended rest period. Procedures performed on a Thursday or Friday allow a weekend to pass before the working week, effectively reducing the leave required for desk-based roles to three to four days.
