Hair Transplant Consultation Online vs In Person

The choice between an online consultation and an in-person assessment for a hair transplant has become more relevant as video technology has improved and more clinics offer remote first assessments. Understanding what each format can and cannot provide helps patients use each appropriately.

An online consultation via video call or photo assessment can effectively deliver: a preliminary assessment of Norwood Stage from photographs, an indication of likely surgical candidacy, a broad graft count estimate, initial discussion of technique and expected outcomes, and an opportunity for the patient to evaluate the surgeon’s communication style and approach. For many patients, this is enough to determine whether a clinic is worth pursuing further.

What an online consultation cannot replace: physical examination of the donor zone under magnification (dermoscopy), accurate measurement of hair calibre and natural grouping, assessment of scalp laxity, evaluation of miniaturisation in the donor area that would affect graft permanence (DUPA risk), and the hairline design conversation that requires the surgeon to see the patient’s face in three dimensions.

The appropriate sequence for most patients considering surgery: an online consultation or photo assessment as the first step, to establish whether there is a reasonable basis for candidacy, followed by an in-person assessment at the point of serious intent to proceed. Committing to a procedure based on an online consultation alone is not appropriate — the in-person assessment is what confirms the specifics that determine whether and how to proceed.

For patients travelling significant distances, video consultations reduce unnecessary journeys for candidates who turn out not to be suitable, while ensuring those who are suitable make the journey with a well-informed basis for their decision.
