Hair Transplant and Biotin: Does It Actually Help

✎ anzal • 📅 14 April 2026 • ⏱ 1 min read

Biotin supplements are marketed aggressively to hair transplant patients, and the claims made by many supplement brands suggest a role in improving results that the clinical evidence simply does not support at the level implied. Here is the honest assessment.

Biotin (vitamin B7) is essential for normal hair, nail, and skin health. Severe biotin deficiency — which is genuinely rare in people eating a normal diet — causes hair loss among other symptoms, and supplementation in deficient patients restores normal growth. This biological fact has been extrapolated by supplement marketing into the implication that taking biotin will improve hair growth in non-deficient people.

The evidence does not support this extrapolation. Studies on biotin supplementation in people who are not biotin deficient show no meaningful improvement in hair growth. Biotin deficiency is uncommon in adults eating varied diets — unless there is a specific absorption issue or dietary restriction that predisposes to it.

In the post-transplant context specifically: a well-nourished patient with no nutritional deficiencies does not benefit from biotin supplementation. The graft survival and growth timeline is driven by the follicle biology, the surgical technique, and the healing environment — not by the amount of biotin in the circulation above adequacy.

If you are considering supplementation in the post-transplant period, prioritise protein adequacy, vitamin D (if not already optimal), and iron (particularly for women). These have more convincing evidence for a role in hair and wound healing than biotin in the non-deficient population.
