By month six after a hair transplant, most patients have their first genuinely encouraging view of what the result is going to look like. The growth that has emerged since months three to four has had two to three months to develop, and the result is beginning to take shape. Here is what to expect.
Hair density at month six: typically 50 to 70% of the final density is visible. The transplanted hairs have grown to approximately 3 to 5 centimetres from their emergence point, which is enough to begin styling. Many patients can style their hair in a way that incorporates the new growth and produces a meaningful improvement in appearance from this point.
Hair calibre at month six: the transplanted hairs are thicker than at month four but have not yet reached their final terminal calibre. The hair shaft continues to mature in diameter from month four through to month twelve — the result gets progressively better even after growth is clearly visible.
The frontal hairline at month six typically looks good. The mid-scalp behind it may still have some patchiness that will fill in further. The crown — where growth tends to lag slightly behind the frontal area — may still be in an early stage of emerging.
Photographs at month six compared to pre-operative photographs show a meaningful difference for most patients. This is the first point at which showing the result to someone who did not know about the procedure is likely to produce genuine recognition of the improvement rather than the ‘early stages’ response you might get at month four.
