Hair Transplant for Eyebrow Restoration After Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy-related hair loss can affect the eyebrows as well as the scalp, and for many patients the loss of eyebrows is experienced as particularly affecting to their appearance and sense of self. Understanding the options for eyebrow restoration — temporary and permanent — is an important part of survivorship care.

During and immediately after active chemotherapy, eyebrow hair typically regrows spontaneously. Most patients see eyebrow regrowth beginning within two to three months of completing treatment, with full or near-full restoration within six to twelve months. For these patients, cosmetic measures — eyebrow pencil, powder, semi-permanent makeup — bridge the regrowth period effectively.

A minority of patients experience permanent or long-term eyebrow loss following chemotherapy — either because the specific drug regimen caused lasting follicle damage, or because the brow hair density that returns is significantly lower than pre-treatment. This group may be candidates for eyebrow hair transplant surgery once their oncological treatment is complete and their health is stable.

The criteria for eyebrow transplant candidacy after chemotherapy include: confirmed complete remission, stable general health, at least twelve months since completion of treatment, and confirmed that the loss is stable and not recovering further. The surgery itself is appropriate for healthy patients in remission and carries no specific additional risk related to the chemotherapy history in most cases.

An oncology letter confirming remission status and suitability for elective surgical procedures is a standard part of the pre-operative assessment for any patient with a recent cancer diagnosis.
