FUE Hair Transplant

Hair Transplant: Am I Suitable for FUE

FUE (follicular unit extraction) is the most widely used technique in modern hair transplant surgery, but not every patient is automatically the best candidate for it. A thorough suitability assessment covers several specific factors.

Donor density is the primary determinant of FUE candidacy. FUE extracts individual follicular units from the donor zone at the back and sides of the scalp. If the donor zone does not have sufficient density — typically at least 60 to 80 follicular units per square centimetre — the number of grafts that can be safely extracted without visibly depleting the donor area is limited. Patients with naturally low donor density may require a different approach or more conservative graft counts.

Hair characteristics affect both extraction difficulty and visual outcome. Coarse, dark hair of medium calibre is the easiest to work with and produces the highest visual density per graft. Very fine hair requires more grafts per unit of visual coverage. Extremely tightly curled hair increases transection risk during extraction and requires specific technique.

Scalp laxity — the degree of looseness of the scalp skin — affects the ease of extraction. A tight, inelastic scalp makes FUE more technically challenging and can increase transection rates if the technique is not adjusted accordingly.

General health fitness for a long procedure under local anaesthetic — typically six to nine hours — is also assessed. Patients with significant cardiovascular conditions, poorly controlled diabetes, or active skin conditions affecting the scalp require specific pre-operative planning.

The only reliable way to determine your specific FUE candidacy is through a in-person assessment with a surgeon who examines the donor zone under magnification and assesses your individual characteristics.
