Establishing the right hair care routine after a hair transplant is one of the most practical contributions you can make to the quality of your result. The routine evolves over the first six months as the scalp heals and the new hair grows in — and getting each phase right makes a meaningful difference.
Weeks one to two: Wash gently once daily using diluted baby shampoo applied by pouring, not rubbing. Pat dry with a clean towel — never rub. No styling products, no hairdryer (or cool air only). No combing through the recipient area. Sleep elevated on clean pillowcases.
Weeks three to four: Scabs should have cleared by now with correct washing. You can increase washing to a normal frequency and apply slightly more pressure — but remain gentle. A soft, wide-tooth comb can be used on the donor area. Continue to avoid styling products.
Month two: Transition to a gentle daily shampoo. Styling products can be reintroduced, but avoid anything requiring significant mechanical combing through the recipient zone. Hair dryers can be used on a low, cool setting.
From month three onwards: Return to a normal hair care routine with awareness of the new hair that is growing through — it will initially be fine and fragile, and over-enthusiastic styling during this phase is counterproductive. By month six, the new hair is sufficiently established to treat as you would any other hair.
