Hair Loss Myths Debunked

Hair loss is surrounded by myths that persist despite abundant evidence to the contrary. These misconceptions delay appropriate treatment, fuel false hope in ineffective products, and cause unnecessary anxiety. Here are the most common ones — debunked.

Myth: Wearing a hat causes hair loss. False. Hats do not cause androgenetic alopecia. They may cause some temporary flattening of the hair shaft, but they do not affect follicle health or accelerate genetic hair loss in any meaningful way.

Myth: Hair loss comes from your mother’s side. Partly false. Androgenetic alopecia is polygenic — influenced by multiple genes inherited from both parents. Your maternal grandfather’s hair pattern is one predictor, but it is far from the only one. Look at both sides of your family history.

Myth: Washing hair too often causes hair loss. False. Washing removes dead hair that was already in the telogen phase — it does not accelerate the loss of healthy anagen hairs. Washing frequency does not affect androgenetic hair loss.

Myth: Stress causes permanent hair loss. Mostly false. Stress can cause telogen effluvium — temporary, reversible shedding. It does not cause permanent androgenetic baldness in those not genetically predisposed.

Myth: If you start losing hair early, you will go completely bald. False. Onset age does not determine final extent of loss. Many men who begin losing hair in their twenties stabilise at moderate stages. Family history and individual genetics are better — though imperfect — guides.
