Hair Loss Myths: What Is Not True

Hair loss attracts a disproportionate share of myths, misconceptions, and outright misinformation — partly because the condition is so common and emotionally significant, and partly because the genuine treatments are not universally known. Here is a direct debunking of the most persistent myths.

Myth: Hair loss comes from your mother’s side. False. Androgenetic hair loss is polygenic — it is influenced by multiple genes inherited from both parents. The X-linked AR gene on the maternal X chromosome is one contributor but not the sole determinant. You cannot predict your hairline from your maternal grandfather alone.

Myth: Hats cause hair loss. False. There is no mechanism by which wearing a hat reduces follicle activity or accelerates androgenetic loss. Hats do not occlude the scalp enough to cause meaningful oxygen or nutrient deprivation to follicles. This myth persists without any supporting evidence.

Myth: Washing your hair too often causes hair loss. False. Washing accelerates the shedding of hairs already in the telogen phase — you may notice more hairs in the drain on wash days — but this does not cause additional hair loss beyond the normal cycling that would occur anyway. Washing does not damage follicles.

Myth: Hair loss skips a generation. False. Hair loss does not follow Mendelian single-gene inheritance patterns. It cannot be predicted to skip or follow generational patterns — it depends on the combination of variants inherited from both sides.

Myth: Stress is the main cause of hair loss. Partially false. Stress causes telogen effluvium, which is temporary and reversible. Stress does not cause androgenetic alopecia. People who experience stress-related shedding and assume they have lost those hairs permanently are conflating two different conditions.
