Hair Loss in Your Teens: Is It Normal

Noticing hair loss as a teenager is unusual, but it does happen, and the anxiety it causes is understandable. Understanding what is normal at this age, what might warrant investigation, and what the options are helps young people approach the situation with clarity rather than panic.

Mild diffuse shedding during puberty can be entirely normal as hormone levels fluctuate and the hair growth cycle is temporarily disrupted. This type of shedding is not patterned — it affects the whole scalp rather than following the receding hairline or crown thinning characteristic of androgenetic alopecia — and typically resolves without treatment as hormonal levels stabilise.

True androgenetic alopecia beginning in the mid-teens does occur, though it is uncommon. If the loss is patterned — concentrated at the hairline or crown rather than diffuse — and progressive over six to twelve months, this warrants clinical assessment. A dermatologist or trichologist can confirm the diagnosis and discuss appropriate management.

Other causes of hair loss in teenagers include: nutritional deficiency (particularly iron and zinc, common in those with poor diet or high athletic demand), alopecia areata, scalp fungal infections (tinea capitis), and in some cases medication side effects. All of these are identifiable and treatable.

Hair transplant surgery is not appropriate for teenagers. The pattern of loss has not declared itself, the donor supply should be preserved, and no reputable surgeon will perform the procedure at this age. Medical assessment and, where appropriate, nutritional support or medical treatment are the relevant interventions.
