Hair Transplant Aftercare Products: What You Actually Need

The post-operative period generates many questions about which products to use, which to avoid, and whether the specific products recommended by the clinic are necessary or whether similar alternatives will do. Here is a practical guide.

The post-operative shampoo provided by your clinic is not merely a marketing add-on. Post-operative shampoos are formulated with a specific pH, without sulphates, alcohol, or fragrance, and are designed to gently cleanse the healing scalp without disturbing the forming scabs or irritating the sensitive healing skin. Using a regular supermarket shampoo in the first two weeks carries a real risk of damaging the healing process. Use the provided shampoo until you are cleared to transition to a regular mild formula.

Saline spray — often included in post-operative kits — is used in the first days to keep the recipient area gently moistened and prevent excessive drying of the early scabs. Regular, gentle misting with the provided spray (or a simple saline solution at home) helps the scabs form in a way that is more protective of the grafts beneath.

Beyond the clinic-provided post-operative kit, the additional products you need are minimal: regular paracetamol for the first few days of donor area discomfort, an antihistamine if prescribed for itch management, and any antibiotics or antibacterial washes specifically prescribed by your surgeon.

Products you should specifically avoid in the first month: minoxidil (discontinue before surgery and hold until cleared by your surgeon at the one-month mark), any alcohol-containing scalp products, styling gels, waxes, sprays, dry shampoos, and head lice treatments. All of these either irritate healing skin, disrupt graft anchoring, or interfere with the healing process in ways that matter.
