One of the most useful things to understand before having a hair transplant is the growth timeline. Knowing what to expect — and when — prevents unnecessary anxiety during the months of waiting between procedure and final result.
Weeks 1–2: Healing
Crusting and swelling resolve. Transplanted hairs remain visible, sitting in their new positions. The scalp is healing around each graft.
Weeks 3–6: Shedding
Transplanted hairs shed as follicles enter the telogen phase. This is normal. The scalp may look thinner than before the procedure. The follicles remain alive beneath the surface.
Months 2–3: The Ugly Phase
The recipient zone is largely dormant. Some patients experience small pimples or ingrown hairs as new growth begins to push through the skin. The overall appearance is often at its worst during this phase — a normal part of the process.
Month 3–4: First Sprouts
New fine hairs begin emerging from the transplanted follicles. They are initially very fine and soft — often called “baby hairs” — but their presence confirms the grafts have survived and growth is underway.
Month 5–6: Visible Progress
Growth accelerates. The hairline begins to take shape. Density is still below the final result but the improvement is encouraging and clearly visible. Most patients feel a significant confidence boost at this stage.
Month 7–9: Continued Growth and Thickening
Hair calibre increases — hairs thicken from fine to normal diameter. The result starts to look genuinely natural. Friends and family may comment on the improvement.
Month 10–12: Approaching Final Result
The vast majority of growth and thickening is complete. The transplanted hairline is well established and looks natural. Some patients continue to see minor improvements through to month 18.
Month 12–18: Full Result
The final result is fully visible. This is the benchmark point for assessing the success of the procedure. Photographs at this stage form the true “after” picture.
