FUE Hair Transplant

How Hair Transplants Have Changed Over 30 Years

The history of hair transplant surgery is one of the most dramatic technological evolutions in modern medicine, from a procedure associated with obvious, unnatural results to one that is essentially undetectable when performed correctly. Understanding this history helps patients appreciate why the technique matters as much as the decision to have surgery.

The earliest hair transplants, performed from the 1950s onwards, used large punch grafts of four to ten millimetres — removing circular plugs of skin containing many hairs and transplanting them into recipient sites. The result was the characteristic pluggy, doll-hair appearance that defined public perception of hair transplants for decades and remains the primary source of stigma around the procedure even today.

The 1990s saw the transition to follicular unit transplantation (FUT), also called strip surgery. Rather than large plugs, donor hair was removed as a strip and dissected under microscopes into individual follicular units — groups of one to four hairs as they grow naturally. This produced dramatically more natural results and allowed much higher graft counts per session.

FUE — follicular unit extraction — was developed in the early 2000s and has become the dominant technique over the past fifteen years. By removing individual follicular units directly rather than a strip, FUE eliminated the linear scar of FUT and further improved recovery times. Modern FUE with appropriately experienced surgeons produces results that are genuinely indistinguishable from natural growth.
