Am I Suitable for a Hair Transplant? Key Factors

✎ anzal • 📅 30 January 2026 • ⏱ 1 min read

Hair transplant surgery produces excellent results for suitable candidates — and disappointing results for unsuitable ones. Understanding the factors that determine suitability helps you know whether surgery is genuinely the right path for you.

Adequate Donor Supply

The most fundamental requirement: you must have sufficient healthy hair in the permanent donor zone to cover the area of loss at meaningful density. Patients with very fine, sparse donor hair, or those whose hair loss has extended into the traditional donor zone, may not be candidates.

Stable Hair Loss

Ideally, your hair loss pattern should be established and stable (or stabilised with medication) before surgery. Transplanting into a rapidly progressing loss pattern risks the result becoming isolated as surrounding hair continues to thin.

Realistic Expectations

Candidates must understand what transplantation can and cannot achieve. It will not restore the density of an unaffected 20-year-old scalp. It will not stop ongoing loss in non-transplanted areas. Patients with unrealistic expectations are poor candidates regardless of their physical suitability.

Good General Health

Hair transplant surgery is performed under local anaesthetic and is generally very safe. However, certain conditions — uncontrolled diabetes, active autoimmune conditions, bleeding disorders, or use of anticoagulant medication — may require careful management before proceeding.

Not Active Alopecia Areata

Active autoimmune alopecia can destroy transplanted grafts just as it did the original hair. Surgery during active disease is contraindicated.

Age and Trajectory

Very young patients with early, rapidly progressive loss may benefit from waiting and trying medical management first. Older patients with stable, well-established patterns are typically excellent candidates.
