Does Wearing a Helmet Cause Hair Loss

Cyclists, motorcyclists, and athletes who regularly wear helmets often wonder whether the friction, pressure, and heat created by helmet use contributes to hair loss. This is a reasonable question that deserves a specific answer.

Androgenetic hair loss — the genetic, pattern-based hair loss that affects the majority of men and many women — is not caused or worsened by wearing a helmet. The mechanism of androgenetic alopecia is hormonal: DHT miniaturises follicles that are genetically susceptible. Pressure or friction from a helmet does not change DHT levels or alter the genetic predisposition of follicles.

Traction alopecia — hair loss caused by repeated mechanical tension on the follicle — is a real condition that can result in permanent hair loss if sustained over long periods. However, traction alopecia requires the type of sustained directional pulling seen in very tight hairstyles (braids, ponytails, hair extensions), not the generalised pressure of a helmet.

The most helmet-related hair condition is folliculitis — inflammation of hair follicles caused by sweat, heat, and friction under the helmet. This is temporary, treatable, and does not cause permanent hair loss. It is more common in patients who wear helmets for extended periods without washing the scalp and helmet liner regularly.

If you are losing hair and wear a helmet regularly, the helmet is almost certainly not the cause. The cause is most likely androgenetic alopecia, which is progressing independently. This is worth clarifying because the incorrect attribution can delay appropriate treatment.
