Minoxidil is one of the most widely used hair loss treatments, but incorrect application significantly reduces its effectiveness. Here is how to use it correctly for maximum benefit.
Apply to a dry scalp. Minoxidil should be applied to a dry scalp, not to wet or damp hair. Applying to wet hair dilutes the solution and reduces absorption. Wait at least four hours after washing before applying, or apply before washing if you wash in the morning.
Apply to the scalp, not the hair. Minoxidil needs to reach the follicle — which means the scalp surface, not the hair shaft. Part the hair in sections to expose the scalp and apply the solution or foam directly to the skin. Using it on the hair itself wastes product and reduces efficacy.
Use the correct amount. For the 5% topical solution, 1ml twice daily (or 2ml once daily) is the standard dose. For the foam formulation, half a capful twice daily. More is not more effective and increases the risk of side effects.
Leave it on. Minoxidil needs to remain on the scalp for at least four hours to be adequately absorbed. Do not wash the hair, exercise extensively, or go to bed immediately after application — sweat and water wash it off before absorption is complete.
Be consistent. Missing doses reduces effectiveness. Minoxidil works by maintaining a continuous stimulus to the follicle — irregular use produces irregular results. If you miss a dose, resume the next scheduled dose rather than doubling up.
Start early and keep going. Minoxidil is not a cure — it requires continuous use. Stopping it results in loss of the benefit within three to six months as follicles return to their natural cycle without the stimulus.
