Numbness After Hair Transplant: How Long Does It Last?

Many patients notice areas of numbness or altered sensation in the scalp after a hair transplant — in both the donor and recipient zones. This is a recognised and expected consequence of the procedure, not a complication, and resolves over time in the vast majority of cases.

Why Numbness Occurs

Hair transplant surgery involves creating thousands of small punctures in the scalp for graft extraction and implantation. This inevitably disrupts small sensory nerve fibres within the skin. The local anaesthetic also causes temporary numbness that extends beyond the procedure itself. Together, these factors result in areas of reduced or absent sensation.

Where Numbness Is Most Common

  • Recipient zone (hairline/crown): Often feels numb or tight in the first 2–4 weeks
  • Donor zone (back of scalp): A band of numbness is common across the strip where extraction occurred, sometimes extending to the back of the ears

Timeline for Recovery of Sensation

Most numbness resolves within 3–6 months as nerve fibres regenerate. The process is gradual — patients often notice progressive improvement month by month rather than a sudden return of sensation. A small number of patients experience mild altered sensation for up to 12 months.

Tingling and Hypersensitivity

As nerves regenerate, some patients experience periods of tingling, shooting sensations, or hypersensitivity in the affected areas. This is a normal part of nerve recovery — the nerves “waking up” — and generally resolves as regeneration completes.

When to Be Concerned

Persistent, complete numbness in a large area beyond 12 months is uncommon and worth discussing with your surgeon. This is rare with standard FUE technique performed by an experienced practitioner.
