Oral Minoxidil for Hair Loss: What to Know

✎ anzal • 📅 4 January 2026 • ⏱ 1 min read

Low-dose oral minoxidil has emerged as one of the most significant developments in hair loss pharmacology of the past five years. Originally developed as a blood pressure medication, minoxidil was subsequently found to stimulate hair growth — leading to its widespread use as a topical scalp treatment. The oral formulation, at much lower doses than those used for blood pressure, is showing impressive results in androgenetic hair loss.

The doses used for hair loss are considerably lower than antihypertensive doses: typically 0.625 to 2.5 mg daily, compared to 5 to 40 mg daily for blood pressure treatment. At these low doses, the systemic vasodilatory effect is minimal in most patients, though blood pressure and pulse should be monitored at initiation.

The evidence for low-dose oral minoxidil in androgenetic hair loss is impressive in the context of a treatment with such a brief clinical trial history. Multiple studies have shown significant improvements in hair density, reduced shedding, and patient-reported satisfaction. Early head-to-head data comparing oral to topical minoxidil suggests the oral formulation may be more effective — possibly because oral administration avoids the compliance issues and skin absorption variability of topical application.

Side effects at low doses are generally mild. The most commonly reported are peripheral oedema (mild fluid retention, typically in the ankles) in a small proportion of patients, and increased hair growth at non-scalp body sites (hypertrichosis) — this is more of a consideration in women than men. Serious cardiovascular side effects at low doses are uncommon but should be discussed with the prescribing physician, particularly in patients with existing cardiovascular conditions.
