Sun Exposure After Hair Transplant: How Long to Avoid It

✎ anzal • 📅 10 March 2026 • ⏱ 1 min read

The UK may not be the sunniest country, but sun protection after a hair transplant matters year-round. UV exposure in the post-operative period has specific risks that every patient should be aware of.

Why Sun Exposure Is a Problem After Transplant

Graft Damage

In the first 2 weeks, the newly implanted grafts are vulnerable. UV radiation and heat from the sun can stress healing tissue, impair blood flow, and in severe cases cause damage to graft sites that are still healing.

Pigmentation Changes

The recipient area — where skin has been penetrated by thousands of tiny incisions — is more susceptible to hyperpigmentation (darkening) with UV exposure in the first 3–6 months. Dark patches in the hairline are cosmetically unwelcome.

Increased Swelling

Heat dilates blood vessels and can worsen post-operative swelling in the first week, extending recovery time.

Sun Protection Timeline

Week 1–2: No Direct Sun on Scalp

Avoid direct sunlight on the treated area entirely. Stay in shade or wear a loose, non-contact hat outdoors.

Weeks 2–4: Cover Up

After grafts are anchored, a hat or SPF 50+ sunscreen (applied carefully to avoid disrupting remaining crusts) provides adequate protection.

Months 1–6: SPF Protection Advised

The scalp remains more photosensitive than normal for several months. Apply SPF 50 to the scalp any time you plan extended outdoor exposure, particularly in summer.

After 6 Months: Normal Sun Exposure Safe

The scalp has fully healed by 6 months and normal sun exposure is safe, though SPF protection is always sensible for long-term scalp health.
