Hair Transplant and Sun Exposure: What to Avoid

Sun exposure is a topic that comes up frequently in post-operative guidance, and it is one where the reasoning behind the advice is important to understand — particularly for patients who are travelling for their procedure or who have holidays planned in the recovery period.

In the first two weeks after a hair transplant, direct sun exposure to the scalp should be completely avoided. The newly implanted grafts sit in healing recipient sites, and ultraviolet radiation on healing skin increases inflammation, prolongs healing, and risks hyper-pigmentation of the recipient area scars as they heal. The donor area, which has its own healing extraction sites, is equally vulnerable.

The practical implication is that patients should wear a loose-fitting hat whenever outdoors during the first two weeks. The hat must not press directly on the recipient area in the very early days — a wide-brimmed hat that sits above the transplanted area, rather than a cap that presses down on it, is the safer choice.

From week three to six, gradual reintroduction of sun exposure is acceptable but should still be managed carefully. SPF 50 sunscreen on the scalp is important — particularly in the donor scar area, where newly healed skin is more susceptible to UV damage. Continue wearing a hat for extended outdoor exposure.

Patients who have a holiday abroad planned within six to eight weeks of their procedure should discuss this with their surgeon before booking. Beach sun, salt water, and heat all interact with the post-operative scalp in ways that require specific management advice.
