How to Travel for a Hair Transplant: A Practical Guide

Travelling for a hair transplant — whether across the UK or internationally — requires practical planning that most clinics address inadequately in their patient materials. This guide covers what to actually organise for a smooth experience.

Accommodation: For a full-day FUE procedure, arrange accommodation for the night before (to arrive rested and on time) and the night of the procedure (you should not drive home on the procedure day and should have someone with you for the first evening). Most central London clinics have multiple hotel options within walking distance at a range of price points.

Transport on the day: Do not drive on the procedure day. You will have had sedation or pre-operative medication, and the post-procedure state — some tenderness, possible light-headedness — makes driving inadvisable. Arrange a taxi, Uber, or a companion to travel with you.

What to bring: Loose-fitting button-down shirts or zip-up tops that do not require pulling over your head — putting tight clothing over the recipient area in the first days risks disrupting grafts. Any prescribed pre-operative medication. Your ID and any relevant medical history documents.

Flying after a hair transplant: Flying within 48 hours of a hair transplant is not recommended — the cabin pressure change and dry air can affect the healing scalp. Most surgeons recommend waiting at least five to seven days before flying. If you must fly back the next day, discuss this with your surgeon in advance.

Work arrangements: For desk-based roles, plan for three to five days off. For physical or patient-facing roles, seven to ten days. Build your travel schedule around the post-operative requirements, not the other way around.
