The day of your FUE hair transplant can feel daunting — but knowing exactly what to expect helps you arrive calm, prepared and ready. Here is a detailed walkthrough of how the day unfolds at Harley Street Hairline.
Arrival and Welcome
You will be asked to arrive at 19 Harley Street Hospital at your agreed time, typically early morning. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing — ideally a button-up shirt so you do not disturb your grafts when getting dressed later. On arrival, you will be welcomed by the team and settled into a private consultation room.
Consent Review
Before anything begins, Dr Qurbain will review your consent form with you personally. This is your opportunity to raise any last-minute questions. The planned graft count, any donor area considerations, and expected downtime will all be confirmed. Nothing proceeds until you are completely satisfied.
Hairline Design and Marking
One of the most important moments of the day — Dr Qurbain will mark your new hairline using a surgical pen. The design is tailored to your facial structure, age, donor supply and long-term hair loss trajectory. Photographs are taken for your record. You will be asked to approve the design before proceeding.
Donor Area Trimming
A small strip at the back and sides of your scalp — the donor zone — is trimmed short to allow precise follicular unit extraction. The rest of your hair remains untouched, which means most patients can cover the donor area immediately after the procedure.
Local Anaesthetic
Local anaesthetic is applied to the donor and recipient areas. You may feel mild pressure or a brief sting during the initial injections, but once numb you will feel nothing. The anaesthetic takes effect within minutes and is topped up as needed throughout the day.
Extraction
Dr Qurbain extracts follicular units individually from the donor zone using a micro-punch tool. Each follicle is carefully harvested to preserve angle, direction and integrity. Depending on your planned graft count, this stage typically takes two to three hours.
Graft Preparation
While extraction is underway, harvested grafts are placed in a chilled, nutrient-rich solution to preserve viability. The team carefully inspects and prepares each follicular unit under magnification, grouping them by size — single-hair grafts for the hairline and multi-hair grafts for density behind.
Implantation
Dr Qurbain creates tiny recipient sites in the recipient area — designed at precise angles and depths to mimic natural hair growth — and places each graft individually. This is the most time-intensive stage. Lunch and refreshment breaks are taken throughout the day to keep you comfortable.
Discharge and Aftercare
Once implantation is complete, your scalp is gently cleaned and photographed. Dr Qurbain will walk you through your aftercare kit and written instructions — covering sleeping position, washing protocol and what to expect over the coming weeks. You are free to leave in approximately one to two hours after completion. A follow-up call is scheduled for the next morning, and your 12-month follow-up programme begins from this point.
