Correct washing technique in the weeks following a hair transplant is essential. Too aggressive, and you risk dislodging grafts or causing damage. Too gentle, and crusts accumulate and increase infection risk. Here is the technique most surgeons recommend.
When to Start Washing
Most surgeons advise a first gentle wash at 24–48 hours post-procedure, using saline spray or clinic-provided solution. The first proper shampoo wash typically begins at day 3–5, as instructed by your surgeon.
What to Use
- A gentle, fragrance-free baby shampoo or clinic-provided shampoo
- Lukewarm water — not hot, which increases scalp swelling
- A clean cup or a jug for pouring — not a shower head with direct pressure
Step-by-Step Washing Technique
- Pour lukewarm water gently over the recipient area using a cup
- Apply a small amount of diluted shampoo to your palm and gently dab (do not rub) onto the transplanted zone
- Leave for 1–2 minutes to soften any crusting
- Rinse by pouring water over the scalp — no direct shower pressure
- Pat dry gently with a clean soft towel — never rub
- Allow to air dry or use a hairdryer on the lowest, coolest setting held 30cm from the scalp
When Can You Shower Normally?
Most surgeons advise normal showering — with direct water pressure — from day 14 onwards, once grafts are fully anchored. Some surgeons are comfortable with gentle showering from day 10. Follow your specific surgeon’s guidance.
Softening and Removing Crusts
From day 7–10, crusts can be actively softened by applying olive oil, vitamin E oil, or saline to the scalp 30–45 minutes before washing. Gentle circular massage during washing helps dislodge the softened crusts. Never force or pick crusts that are not yet ready to come away.
