Biotin for Hair Growth: Does It Actually Work

✎ anzal • 📅 30 March 2026 • ⏱ 1 min read

Biotin supplements are among the most widely marketed products for hair health, sold in pharmacies and online with claims about promoting hair growth and reducing hair loss. The truth about biotin and hair is more nuanced than the marketing suggests.

Biotin — vitamin B7 — is an essential nutrient involved in the metabolism of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. It plays a role in keratin production, which is the structural protein that makes up hair, skin, and nails. Deficiency in biotin causes hair thinning and brittle nails, and supplementation in deficient individuals genuinely improves these symptoms.

The problem is that biotin deficiency is genuinely rare in people eating a balanced diet. Eggs, nuts, seeds, fish, meat, and most vegetables contain adequate biotin for normal requirements. For the vast majority of people buying biotin supplements for hair health, they already have sufficient biotin from their diet, and additional supplementation simply results in the excess being excreted.

Multiple clinical studies have found no benefit to biotin supplementation for hair loss in people who are not deficient. The impressive before-and-afters in supplement marketing typically involve individuals who were deficient to begin with, or who made multiple lifestyle changes simultaneously.

If you suspect nutritional deficiency is contributing to your hair loss, a blood test is a far more useful starting point than buying supplements. Test for ferritin, zinc, vitamin D, and thyroid function — deficiencies in these are considerably more common than biotin deficiency and more likely to be driving your hair loss.
