Scalp Health: The Foundation of Good Hair

Scalp health is increasingly recognised as a foundational factor in hair quality and hair loss management. A scalp that is inflamed, dry, congested, or colonised by excessive Malassezia yeast creates a suboptimal environment for follicles regardless of what other treatments are being used.

Seborrhoeic dermatitis — a common inflammatory scalp condition characterised by flaking, redness, and itch — is associated with elevated levels of Malassezia yeast and chronic low-grade inflammation of the scalp. This inflammation can accelerate miniaturisation in genetically susceptible follicles and is worth treating independently of any hair loss therapy. Ketoconazole shampoo (used twice weekly) is the standard first-line treatment and has modest independent evidence for benefit in androgenetic hair loss.

Scalp hygiene matters. Washing the scalp regularly — at least three to four times per week — removes sebum buildup, dead skin cells, and environmental pollutants that can clog follicle openings and contribute to inflammation. The idea that frequent washing causes hair loss is a myth — adequate washing frequency supports scalp health.

Product buildup from styling products, dry shampoo, and conditioner applied to the scalp can accumulate over time and affect follicle function. Periodic clarifying washes to remove product buildup, or simply limiting the application of products directly to the scalp rather than the hair shaft, helps maintain a clean follicle environment.

Scalp massage — gentle, circular massage for two to three minutes daily — has early evidence suggesting it may increase hair thickness over time. The proposed mechanism is mechanical stimulation of the follicle dermal papilla. The commitment required is minimal and the risk is zero.
