Hair Transplant and Diet: What to Eat for Recovery

✎ anzal • 📅 22 March 2026 • ⏱ 1 min read

Nutrition in the post-transplant recovery period supports healing, graft survival, and the quality of new hair growth. While no diet can dramatically accelerate the biological timeline of recovery, nutritional adequacy removes barriers to optimal healing.

Protein: The most important macronutrient for healing and hair growth. Hair is made of keratin — a protein — and wound healing requires protein for tissue repair. Target at least 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily during recovery. Eggs, lean meat, fish, dairy, and legumes are efficient sources.

Vitamin C: Essential for collagen synthesis — the structural protein that forms the framework of healing tissue. Adequate vitamin C supports the formation of the connective tissue that anchors healing graft sites. Citrus fruits, bell peppers, and broccoli are high-concentration sources.

Zinc: Important for wound healing and immune function. Zinc deficiency impairs both processes. Meat, shellfish, nuts, and seeds are good sources. If you are concerned about deficiency, a standard zinc supplement (15mg daily) is safe and inexpensive.

Iron: Adequate iron is essential for oxygen delivery to healing tissue and for hair follicle function. Have your ferritin tested if you have any reason to suspect deficiency. Low ferritin during recovery is a correctable factor that slows both healing and new hair growth.

Hydration: Staying well hydrated supports circulation to the healing scalp. There is no magic hydration target — standard guidance of 1.5 to 2 litres of water per day in normal conditions is appropriate, increasing in hot weather or after exercise.
