The shampoo you use in the weeks after a hair transplant is more important than at any other time in your hair care routine. The wrong product can irritate healing grafts, prolong scabbing, and delay recovery. The right one helps the scalp heal cleanly and efficiently.
In the first four weeks, a gentle, fragrance-free baby shampoo is the most consistently recommended option by hair restoration surgeons. Johnson’s Baby Shampoo is the most frequently cited specific product due to its mild formulation, pH-appropriate balance for healing skin, and absence of harsh surfactants. Dilute it 50:50 with water for the first two weeks.
Avoid any shampoo containing sulphates (SLS or SLES), strong fragrances, alcohol, or ketoconazole in the first four weeks. While ketoconazole has documented benefits for scalp health in the long term, its active ingredients can be mildly irritating to recently operated skin.
From weeks four to eight, you can transition to a gentle daily shampoo without the strict dilution requirement. Look for products labelled suitable for sensitive scalp or colour-treated hair — these tend to be milder than standard formulations.
After eight weeks, you can return to your normal shampoo routine. If you were using ketoconazole shampoo pre-operatively for seborrhoeic dermatitis or as an adjunctive hair loss treatment, you can typically resume it at this point.
