Hair Transplant FUE Graft Survival: Maximising Your Result

Graft survival in FUE depends on factors both within and outside the patient’s control. Understanding both categories helps patients optimise the factors they can influence while setting realistic expectations for what the clinical team is responsible for.

Factors within the clinical team’s control (which you evaluate when choosing a surgeon): the speed and care of extraction (minimising time each graft spends outside the body), the quality of holding solution used during storage, the temperature at which grafts are maintained before implantation, the skill of recipient site creation, and the efficiency of implantation. A well-functioning clinical team minimises graft handling time and maintains optimal conditions throughout the out-of-body period.

Factors within the patient’s control post-operatively: following the prescribed washing protocol correctly, not picking or scratching the recipient area, keeping the scalp out of direct sun for the first month, not exercising intensively in the first two weeks, not drinking alcohol in the first week, not smoking before or after surgery, and maintaining adequate nutrition and hydration through the healing period.

The most common patient-controllable factor that reduces graft survival: physical disruption to the recipient area in the first five to ten days. This includes sleeping face-down on a pillow (compressing the recipient area), wearing tight headwear, rubbing or washing the recipient area too vigorously, and physical activity that produces excessive sweating and scalp movement.

The second most common: returning to smoking too quickly post-surgery. Nicotine vasoconstriction reduces blood supply to healing grafts at exactly the time they need to establish their vascular connections.
