Of all the decisions in the hair transplant process, choosing the right surgeon is the one with the greatest impact on your outcome. A well-executed procedure by an experienced surgeon will look natural for life. A poorly executed procedure is difficult and expensive to correct. Here is a practical framework for your decision.
Step 1: Verify GMC Registration
The surgeon performing your procedure should be fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC). Check their registration at gmc-uk.org. This is a basic minimum requirement — not a differentiator, but a filter.
Step 2: Confirm Specialist Training in Hair Restoration
Hair transplant surgery is a specialist skill not covered by standard surgical training. Ask about specific training in hair restoration. Membership of the British Association of Hair Restoration Surgeons (BAHRS) or the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) indicates specialist engagement. Attendance at specialist training programmes and fellowships is a positive indicator.
Step 3: Volume and Experience
Ask how many FUE procedures the surgeon performs annually. Volume correlates with refinement of technique. A surgeon performing 200+ cases per year has refined their extraction and implantation technique far more than one performing 20–30 cases.
Step 4: Review Real Patient Results
Do not accept a clinic’s online gallery at face value. Ask to see: results at 12+ months, cases similar to yours in Norwood Stage and hair type, and if possible speak with a former patient. Before/after photos that are vague about graft count, timing, and patient demographics should not be your primary evidence.
Step 5: The Consultation Test
A quality surgeon uses the consultation to listen, examine, explain, and advise — not primarily to sell. If your consultation feels commercial rather than clinical, trust that instinct.
