A successful hair transplant is a permanent result — but like all hair, transplanted hair benefits from good care practices. Here is what long-term maintenance looks like once your result is fully established.
Shampoo and Scalp Care
Transplanted hair can be washed with any standard shampoo once healing is complete. There is no need for specialist products on the transplanted area beyond the recovery period. However, a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo is sensible for general scalp health — sulphates can strip natural oils and cause dryness over time.
Haircuts
Transplanted hair can be cut from around 4 weeks post-procedure. Scissors are safe from this point. Clippers can be used once crusting has fully resolved, typically by week 3–4. There is no lifetime restriction on haircut style — transplanted hair is normal hair and can be kept at any length.
Hair Products and Styling
Once fully grown in (12+ months), transplanted hair responds normally to all styling products — pomades, waxes, sprays, and gels are all safe. Chemical treatments (colour, perms) can be used from 6 months onwards, though some surgeons advise waiting 12 months for the first chemical service.
Managing Ongoing Native Hair Loss
The most important long-term consideration is managing the hair loss that continues outside the transplanted zone. Continuing finasteride and/or minoxidil long-term preserves native hair surrounding the transplant and maintains the overall appearance of fullness.
Sun Protection for the Long Term
The scalp is one of the most commonly overlooked areas for sun protection. Long-term UV exposure can cause scalp damage and thinning. SPF 50 sunscreen or a hat provides effective protection during prolonged outdoor exposure.
Annual Review
An annual check with your hair restoration surgeon allows monitoring of any ongoing loss, early intervention if indicated, and planning for future sessions if desired.
