Medications to Avoid After Hair Transplant

Several commonly used medications can interfere with hair transplant outcomes — by thinning the blood, impairing wound healing, or interacting with post-operative drugs. Here is what to discuss with your surgeon before your procedure.

Blood Thinners: Highest Risk

Any medication that reduces blood clotting ability increases bleeding during and after the procedure and can impair graft anchoring. These should be reviewed by your prescribing doctor before surgery:

  • Warfarin, rivaroxaban, apixaban, dabigatran
  • Aspirin (when used as a blood thinner rather than for pain)
  • Clopidogrel
  • Heparin

Never stop anticoagulant medication without consulting the doctor who prescribed it. Your hair surgeon and prescribing doctor need to communicate about safe timing.

NSAIDs: Avoid Before and Immediately After

Ibuprofen, naproxen, and other NSAIDs inhibit platelet function and increase bleeding risk. Avoid for 7–10 days before the procedure and for the first 48–72 hours after. Paracetamol is the safe alternative for pain relief in the post-operative period.

Vitamin E, Fish Oil, and Garlic Supplements

Natural supplements that have blood-thinning properties — vitamin E above 400 IU, high-dose fish oil (omega-3), and garlic supplements — should be discontinued 2 weeks before surgery.

Minoxidil

Some surgeons advise stopping topical minoxidil 2 weeks before surgery as it is a vasodilator and can increase scalp bleeding. Resume 2–4 weeks after surgery once the scalp has healed.

Antibiotics and Your Prescription

Most clinics prescribe prophylactic antibiotics after the procedure. Take these as directed and complete the course. If you are taking other antibiotics for an unrelated reason, inform your surgeon — interactions may need to be managed.
